On August 18, 2025, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office participated in a multi-law enforcement agency Beat Auto Theft Through Law Enforcement (BATTLE) operation. BATTLE is a specialized initiative designed to support complex investigations into vehicle-related crimes.
At approximately 5:10 PM, members of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division, conducting operations along I-25 near downtown (Colorado Springs), observed a Chevrolet Sonic displaying a fictitious temporary license plate. The plate had expired in March 2024 and was not registered to the vehicle.
Deputies initiated a traffic stop and identified the driver as 26-year-old Jorge Hernandez Ornelas, who was unable to provide a driver’s license.
During the contact, deputies noted multiple inconsistencies in his statements.
EPSO K-9 Styx was deployed and conducted an open-air search around the outside of the vehicle, during which he alerted for the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.
A subsequent search revealed the vehicle had been modified to conceal and transport large quantities of illegal drugs.
Hernandez Ornelas admitted to possessing four pounds of methamphetamine inside the vehicle.
He was arrested and booked into the El Paso County Jail on the following charges:
- Unlawful Distribution, Manufacture, Dispensing, or Sale of a Controlled Substance
- Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance
- Special Offender – Drug Offenses
- Fictitious Number on Plates
Hernandez Ornelas is currently being held on a $50,000 bond.
“This case underscores the importance of strong partnerships and proactive law enforcement efforts in the Pikes Peak region,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “The BATTLE initiative brings together specialized teams to disrupt motor vehicle theft and many related crimes and hold offenders accountable. Thanks to the vigilance of my deputies, our local, state, and federal partners, and the skill of K-9 Styx, we prevented a significant amount of dangerous drugs from reaching the most vulnerable in our community. My Office remains steadfast in our mission to reduce victims and protect the citizens of El Paso County.”
