Statement from El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal in Honor of 9/11

El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal issued the following statement on the 24th anniversary of September 11, 2001:

“Today, we remember the tragedy of September 11, 2001, and honor the unbreakable spirit of those who rose in its aftermath—the firefighters, police officers, first responders, and members of our military.

On this day, the world witnessed evil strike at the heart of America. Yet we also saw something greater—the unwavering commitment of citizens who chose service above self. Firefighters climbed toward danger, law enforcement stood firm in chaos, citizens acted with courage, and our military answered the call to defend freedom.

The impact of September 11, 2001, endures in every first responder and service member who wears the badge or uniform, in the families of the fallen who keep legacies alive, and in the resolve of all who carry the weight of what was lost and what must always be protected.

Since America’s founding, each generation has produced patriots whose calling is not only to dream, but to defend this dream. Service above self is not a slogan—it is a way of life.

America has faced trials, adversity, and division. Yet one truth remains constant: there will always be men and women, true patriots, who answer the call, make the sacrifice, and serve with honor. It is because of them our nation still stands—249 years strong.

As we reflect, let us renew our gratitude for those who protect us, strengthen our support for those who serve, and carry forward the legacy of September 11 with honor and unity.

God bless our first responders. God bless our military. And God bless the United States of America.”
