Statement from El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal In Observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day

“Today, we honor the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., a man whose courage, faith, and unwavering commitment to justice helped shape our nation.

“Dr. King reminded us progress is built through service, integrity, and respect for the dignity of every individual. His message continues to challenge each of us to lead with character, to listen with empathy, and to stand firm against injustice — even when it requires moral courage.

“As Sheriff of Colorado’s most populous county, I believe public service carries a profound responsibility: to protect constitutional rights, to treat every person with fairness and humanity, and to strengthen trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve. These principles align with Dr. King’s vision of a society rooted in justice, accountability, and mutual respect.

“On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I encourage reflection, service, and meaningful action. Let us recommit ourselves to unity, understanding, and the shared responsibility of building safer, stronger communities for all.”
