Sheriff’s Office Detective Serves as Guest Speaker at Canadian Financial Crime Conference

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is proud to share Detective Marissa Williams served as a guest speaker at the 3rd Annual Financial Crime Conference, hosted by the Ontario Provincial Police in Canada.

Detective Williams presented a case study highlighting a complex, multi-year investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Office between 2019 and 2025. The investigation identified more than 20 suspects involved in an organized scheme to defraud, victimizing over 260 individuals nationwide and resulting in more than $2.5 million in cumulative losses.

The scheme involved the fraudulent advertisement of vehicles and farm equipment on Craigslist, where victims were directed to complete purchases through a fake “eBay escrow” system. Victims received emails which appeared legitimate, confirming escrow payments which were, in fact, being sent to private accounts controlled by the suspects.

As a guest speaker, Detective Williams discussed the investigative process, the evidence which led to case breakthroughs, and the lessons learned in tracking and prosecuting organized financial fraud operations.

El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal commended Detective Williams, stating, “Detective Williams exemplifies the professionalism, dedication, and tenacity required to bring complex financial investigations to resolution and provide justice for victims. Her work reflects our continued commitment to holding those who commit cryptocurrency and financial crimes responsible. She has represented our agency and community with excellence.”

The Sheriff’s Office extends its gratitude to the Ontario Provincial Police for the invitation and recognition of Detective Williams’ expertise in this critical area of law enforcement.
