Collaborative Cleanup of Illegal Homeless Camps Near USAFA Property

On August 5, 2025, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office partnered with El Paso County Planning and Development and the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) to remove and clear an area near USAFA property unlawfully occupied with illegal encampments.

The area, discovered during a routine patrol by the Sheriff’s Office earlier in July, had shown signs of extensive use and environmental impact.

Earlier, on July 31, deputies contacted and cited three individuals for trespassing. The individuals were also offered resources and assistance available to those experiencing homelessness.

Members of the Sheriff’s Posse maintained initial site security and presence during the cleanup alongside deputies. The coordinated cleanup effort reflects the ongoing commitment to maintaining public safety and environmental stewardship across the Pikes Peak region.

“Addressing illegal encampments and their impacts on public and federal lands requires a strong, united response,” said El Paso County Sheriff Joseph Roybal. “This operation is a clear example of what’s possible when agencies work together to protect our community, preserve our landscapes, and offer support to those in need.”

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and USAFA Security Forces will continue to monitor the area to ensure the area remains clear of future illegal encampments.
